What is a Korean Bathhouse? (목욕탕이란?)

A Korean public bathhouse (목욕탕, mogyoktang) is a communal bathing facility where visitors bathe in the nude (same-sex sections only). It is a deeply rooted part of Korean culture — similar to Japanese onsen, but without natural hot springs.

A 찜질방 (jjimjilbang) is a larger version with heated rooms, resting areas, and often sleeping facilities — open to mixed genders in the common area.

A 사우나 (sauna) usually refers to a dry or steam sauna room within a bathhouse complex.

Step-by-Step: How to Use a Korean Bathhouse

  1. 1Pay the entrance fee (입장료) at the front desk. Usually ₩8,000–15,000.
  2. 2Receive a locker key and towel (if included). Check if towels are provided or need to be rented.
  3. 3Separate into men's (남성) or women's (여성) changing room (탈의실).
  4. 4Undress completely and store your belongings in the locker.
  5. 5Shower before entering the bathing pools — this is mandatory etiquette.
  6. 6Enjoy the hot tubs (탕), cold pool, sauna room (사우나), and steam room.
  7. 7After bathing, dry off and use the rest area. In jjimjilbang, change into the provided uniform (찜질복) to access common areas.
  8. 8Finish at the grooming area — blow dryers and basic amenities are usually available.

Key Etiquette Rules

  • Always shower before entering any pool. This is the most important rule.
  • Bathing areas are nude — swimsuits are not allowed in the bath section.
  • Jjimjilbang common areas (heated rooms, resting area) require the provided uniform.
  • Keep noise low, especially in sleeping areas.
  • Tattoos may be restricted at some venues — call ahead to confirm.
  • Photography is strictly prohibited inside bathhouses.
